Madikwe, for a while now, has been known as a prime safari location in South Africa. Not only is it located a mere 3-4 hours drive from Johannesburg, it falls within a malaria free zone which is ideal for a family safari holiday and it boasts the magnificent "makanyane" or what is more commonly known as the African Wild Dog.
Also a "Big 5" destination, we were lucky enough to see 4 of the big 5, always just missing the illusive leopard, however, whilst speaking to other guest at various lodges, they had returned to Madikwe purely hoping to have another great sighting of the leopard they saw the year prior, so the leopard does indeed exists in Madikwe.
There are approximately 31 lodges in Madikwe and therefore the reserve offers a wide variety for guests to choose from - from the more affordable accommodation through to the super luxurious lodges, however the level of service at all the lodges we visited was exceptional.
The standard of accommodation is great, the service excellent and the game viewing amazing. We had the most amazing lion sightings with a gorgeous male lion walking right behind our game viewer, and I realised that with one swipe of his gigantic paw ( if he wanted to and he most certainly could) you would surely make a tasty dinner.

The absolute highlight of my visit to Madikwe was sighting the rare African Wild Dog up close and personal and what beautiful creatures they are indeed and guests never seem to realise how lucky they are to spot the wild dog as they are quite rare, and they are indeed what Madikwe Game Reserve is known for.

So is a safari in Madikwe a good experience, seems to be the question wherever I go. Well, my answer would most certainly be YES, without a doubt. I have been lucky enough to experience the 3 main safari regions in South Africa and loved each one of them for different reasons, however I would not hesitate for a second to refer anyone to Madikwe. It is most certainly a different experience to that of the Kruger, but nonetheless still a great experience all round.
Madikwe Reserve is definitely one South Africa’s little secrets. I was lucky enough to see a leopard, but missed the wild dog (any excuse will do to go back ) .
