Is your idea of a fantastic holiday in Africa one that involves packing the family, tents and sleeping bags in the car and self-driving through the Kruger National Park at your own leisurely pace? Do you love to sit around the campfire swopping anecdotes of African vacations gone by and listening to lions roaring as you lie quietly in your snug sleeping bag?
I'm not really a camping kind of girl and I definitely prefer sleeping in a clean and comfortable chalet in a warm bed that's a few feet off the floor, surrounded by 4 solid walls and a locked door. I don't mind checking out game from the back seat of a car but I tend to learn much more about the African wildlife when I'm on a guided game drive with an experienced ranger.
And of course, being in an open safari vehicle the views are so much better, and you're that much closer to the animals, so your adrenaline tends to pump a lot faster than it does when you're straining to get your head out of a car window to see a once-in-a-lifetime leopard kill in the distance.

If staying at a rest camp is not really your style and you're looking for a safari experience with a little more luxury and privacy and a little less cooking in the kitchen, then there are plenty of mid-range safari lodges scattered all over Africa. Many of these can be booked on a fully inclusive basis meaning your meals and selected drinks are taken care of ... and they'll even throw in a few safari activities such as game drives and guided game walks.

Taking the entire family on safari - including granny and grandpa and all the cousins - can become costly which is why mid-range safari lodges are ideal for families and many offer kiddies programmes to entertain your children and teach them loads of interesting facts about nature.

Naturally if you want to experience a truly African safari without compromising on comfort and indulgence , Africa is also home to a wide range of exclusive and uber-luxurious lodges where staff are at your beck and call 24 hours a day. Your spacious private villa provides spectacular 360-degree views, your game-viewing experiences are off-road taking you to corners where you're bound to see the Big 5 close-up and your every wish is literally fulfilled.

Deciding where you want to stay during your visit to Africa is entirely up to you - ensuring that you do whatever it takes to get yourself there - now that's the real issue.
1. I've camped, stayed in many a rest camp, enjoyed safari lodges and stayed in uber luxury at Singita Ebony... and all are awesome and all have their own amazing experiences. For me, I love a rest camp - it's relaxed, you do things at your own pace, you get stuck in making your own braai, enjoying a drink at the waterhole and really doing your own thing.
Then again, luxury is just something else - I'd love to combine a Kruger rest camp trip with a few days in a luxury lodge in the Sabi Sands - it's awesome having the best of both worlds. Plus, giant bathtubs, superb food and guaranteed Big 5 sightings don't always come at rest camp prices...
2. I recently enjoyed a stay at Lion Sands in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve. Man, life is good on that side of life.
Granted, I've never been much of a camper, but now that I have experienced that kind of luxury and lavishness, I can see myself getting very used to it.
