| Day
1 : Savanna Private Game Reserve You will arrive at Johannesburg International Airport where Kim Dennett will meet you and take you to a quiet area where you can relax, freshen up, and enjoy breakfast. Your 40-minute connecting flight will depart at midday for the new Kruger Park International Airport - the largest thatched structure in the world. You will be met at the airport and transferred to Savanna Private Game Reserve in a luxury air-conditioned vehicle laden with drinks and snacks; the 75-minute transfer will take you through banana plantations and rural communities of the Mpumalanga Province. At Savanna Lodge, Paddy Hagelthorn and his team of dedicated experts will receive you and do their best to make this Lodge the most memorable part of your African safari. As one of only 14 guests you will be assured of personal service and attention to detail. You will be shown to your room to settle in and freshen up before meeting for a late lunch and an introduction to your ranger and guide who will become an integral part of your stay at Savanna. Savanna Lodge is located within Sabi Sands: a game viewers’ paradise with Africa’s Big Five and over 450 bird species to see on safari in custom-built Land Rovers. Capable of (almost) anything, the Land Rovers will take you ‘off road’ for a close encounter with the wildlife and indigenous flora. Sabi Sands is one of Africa’s finest reserves and boasts excellent photographic opportunities. The fun begins as the sun sets when your ranger will find a secluded spot to stop and enjoy sundowners. Evening temperatures plummet in winter and we suggest you come prepared with at least a thick jacket and jersey as your safari continues into the evening with the aid of a handheld floodlight to track the nocturnal wildlife while they hunt, forage, and mark their territories. On your return to the Lodge you have time to freshen up before dinner, served in the boma (a traditional reed enclosure) or on the game viewing deck. Afterwards you will have a chance to reflect and unwind around the campfire and to watch the nightlife gather at the floodlit waterhole. Day 2 : Savanna Lodge Safaris start early! After a good night’s rest you will meet your ranger at 5:45am for a strong cuppa coffee before departing on an early morning game drive returning to the Lodge for a well-earned hearty breakfast. The remainder of the morning is yours for a siesta, to lounge beside the pool, or, for the more energetic, a walking safari with your professional ranger. In a similar vein as day one of your safari, you meet for a late lunch and an afternoon game drive before returning to the Lodge for dinner. Day 3 : Savanna Lodge By now you will be familiar with the game drive-eat-sleep routine as another full day of activities at Savanna Private Game Reserve beckons. Day 4 : Lesedi Cultural Village After breakfast on your fourth day, you will bid farewell to your newfound African paradise and head for the next stage of your journey: Lesedi Cultural Village. Travelling back through the Kruger Park Airport you will board a Nationwide flight, which arrives at Johannesburg International Airport at approximately lunchtime, and be transferred to Lesedi Cultural Village. Lesedi, or ‘Place of Light’, became home to people from many nations and tribes who fled the Mfecane wars of the early 1800s. A haven at the foot of the Magaliesburg mountain range, an hour’s drive north of Johannesburg, Lesedi is now a tableau of Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi and Basotho cultures. At Lesedi you will sleep in an African-style hut, equipped with a private bathroom and comfortable beds; eat African-style under the stars in the boma; and feast on a cross-cultural extravaganza of South African folklore. Day 5 : Day of Departure After breakfast at Lesedi you will be taken to Soweto for a tour of the historical landmarks that have made this city famous - including a visit to the Hecter Pieterson museum, Nelson Mandela’s former house, Freedom square, the Apartheid Museum and enjoy lunch at the legendary Wandies. From Soweto you will go to the Premier Diamond Mine, where Cullinan, the world’s largest gemstone, was discovered, for a peek into the workings of a fully operational mine. After the Cullinan excursion, you will be transferred to the Johannesburg International Airport for some duty-free retail therapy before your return flight home or onward travel arrangements. |
